MAPCO also has an earlier 1839 edition of this map on display. It is interesting to compare the 1840 map displayed here with the 1839 edition, as the 1840 map records the names of later purchasers of land across the Adelaide plains district. |

How To View This Map
There are two ways to navigate through this map of Adelaide.
The map can be easily navigated by using the thumbnail images (above) to move directly to the section of the map of interest. Hovering the mouse pointer over the thumbnail images will display a pop-up message showing the present-day suburbs (northern and southern extent) covered by that map section. However, as this is a very early map of the Adelaide plains there are few familiar landmarks, which can
map the map slightly confusing to refer to.
|
To overcome this problem large views of the map have been provided. The large views make navigating the map easier by clearly showing familiar roads and the few recognisable natural landmarks (such as creeks and the River Torrens) shown on the map. This method of navigation of the map images gives a full view of the map with four enlargable views (top
left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right quarters), accessed by clicking the quarters of the large map image.
The resultant enlarged views of the four separate quarters of the map then act as imagemaps, meaning that clicking on an area of the map of interest will lead to a further enlarged view of that part of the map.
The final enlarged view page will include a small thumbnail image of the map, which will enable easy navigation to adjacent map sections.
The easiest way is to click away and see where this leads.
Enjoy this wonderful early map of Adelaide!
