~ Map Of London 1868, By Edward Weller, F.R.G.S. ~
Edward Weller's Map Of London 1868 is now on display! This map was published in 1868 by G.W. Bacon & Co. from their premises at 337 Strand.
This is one of the largest maps to be displayed on the MAPCO website. The detail is stunning! Cassell, Petter & Galpin, who had previously published the map in 1863, declared that their "large map of London, as well as being the largest, is universally admitted to be the best map of London ever produced".
This highly detailed map is on a very large scale of 9⅜" to 1 Statue Mile.
Do take a look at this wonderful map. The detail is truly stunning!
Please note that his map has its own domain name, which is quite easy to remember. It is:
london1868.com
However, the map is still part of the MAPCO collection and the MAPCO : Map And Plan Collection Online website.
Enjoy this truly wonderful map!

A Plan of the City and Liberties of London, Shewing the Extent of the Dreadful Conflagration in the Year 1666
|
~ 27 Maps of London ~
The MAPCO website counter has just passed 2 million page views!
To celebrate I have uploaded 27 preview images of London maps to be displayed over the coming month. The maps range from a 19th century map of Roman London post AD190, through to a small selection from David Hughson's 1817 "Walks Through London". I hope you find these previews of interest.
The first 2 of these maps are now on display...
Those of you fortunate enough to have traced your ancestors back to London in the 1660s will be very interested in the highly detailed map of the Great Fire of London 1666 just displayed. It is:
A Plan of the City and Liberties of London, Shewing the Extent of the Dreadful Conflagration in the Year 1666
The map includes a Reference To All The Churches Both In The City And Suburbs, and a Reference To Remarkable Places.
It is based on Wenceslaus Hollar's 1666 map of the Great Fire of London, with the blank part of the map clearly showing the extent of the fire. However, it is the incredible detail of the streets and buildings that most fascinates. This really is a map to get lost in!
There are 3 levels of enlargement available for this map. The largest is quite a big file (HUGE!) and will take several minutes to download, but it is well worth seeing because of the amazing detail of buildings, churches and streets. Do take a look!
The other map just displayed is:
Plan Of Roman London - Post AD190
Interesting to learn about the origins of some very familiar place names. Enjoy!
Thank you all for your ongoing support of the MAPCO website. I look forward to all of the maps that will be displayed during the next 2 million visits!
Kind regards,
David.

Lavars's New & Improved
Map Of Bristol & Clifton c1863
|
~ Map of Bristol c1863 - Now Online! ~
Lavars's New & Improved Map Of Bristol & Clifton c1863 is now online.
This is an interesting and rare antique map of Bristol & Clifton, machine coloured, dissected and mounted on linen. A main point of interest is that this map was produced between the recommencement of work on the Clifton Suspension Bridge in 1862, and its completion in 1864.
Extremely useful for finding Bristol streets in the 1861 Census, this is a very rare map of Bristol from this period.
Enjoy this interesting antique map of Bristol!

Thomas Moule's Environs Of London

|
~ 1837 Map Of The Environs Of London ~
Thomas Moule's Environs Of London 1837 is now online!
This beautiful map was taken from Moule's "English Counties Delineated" published in 1837. Moule's maps are highly regarded as the most attractive of all of the county maps of the period, with the Environs of London being one of the rarest.
The map is embellished with engraved views of New London Bridge (top left - completed 1831); Suspension Bridge at Hammersmith (top right - completed 1827); Triumphal Arch, Hyde Park Corner (bottom left - completed 1828); and New Post Office (bottom right - completed 1829). Note that over a period of 3 years from 1968 New London Bridge was moved stone by stone to Lake
Havasau, Arizona, U.S.A.
I hope you enjoy this beautiful map!

Cross's New Plan Of London
1850
|
~ MAPCO Revised ~
** Cross's New Plan Of London 1850 **
Cross's New Plan Of London 1850 was the first map to be displayed on the MAPCO website back in February 2006. Advances in technology since that time, in both internet access speeds and monitor sizes, have led to the desire to revise some of the maps displayed on the MAPCO website. The first map ever displayed on the site has also been the most consistently popular, so
it seemed fitting that this should be the first map revised.
The thumbnail map and first page enlargement images of Cross's New Plan Of London 1850 have now been reworked to take full advantage of the wider format website design, and download times of the larger image sizes is now a less significant issue than it was in 2006.
I hope that you find these enlarged images a great improvement. Enjoy this beautiful map.
Look out for more MAPCO Revised maps in coming months!

Map Of Berkshire - Windsor Forest
1856

A Map Of Windsor Forest And Its Vicinity 1823, By Henry Walter.
New Edition Revised And Corrected By Alfred E. Harrison
1856
|
~ MAPCO Heads To The Counties ~
Since October 2008, when MAPCO headed out to beautiful and fascinating 1801 Kent, the focus has been increasingly shifting towards MAPCO spending more time in the Counties.
In late October MAPCO spent time in 1814 London, and then visited 1775 London on New Year's Day 2009. January was spent on a wonderful stroll around the Environs of London c1872, before MAPCO headed back to the Metropolis to investigate 1908 London just prior
to the 1908 Olympic Games. A quick trip on the 1911 London Underground followed at the end of the day, before MAPCO once again headed back to beautiful 1789 North West Kent in February 2009.
It has been a very enjoyable time for MAPCO, covering a wide range of periods and places. MAPCO has really been enjoying time spent in the countryside, and as a result will be spending much more time in the Counties during 2009. The country air is doing MAPCO good!
Being a Berkshire boy at heart MAPCO has been pining for a trip home, so a wonderful Map Of Windsor Forest And Its Vicinity 1823, by Henry Walter, Revised And Corrected To 1856 will be displayed soon. Time spent at the old Wokingham family property at Emmbrook on the Reading Road would be wonderful, but alas, by the 1820s the family had lost the land to enclosure,
so I won't be able to make a visit in 1856, other than to stare in wonder at our property and dream about what might have been. However, there are family members still living in Rose Street in 1856, and also spread out across the Parish of Wokingham, so I will drop in to say hello. It will be wonderful to visit all of the old haunts again.
MAPCO will then head back to 1868-1870 London with the most detailed London map in the collection. After that MAPCO shall take in some 1842 Cornish air with A New And Accurate Map Of The County Of Cornwall From An Actual Survey Made By Thomas Martyn, a map updated to 1842 from Martyn's 1748 original by James Wyld, Geographer To The Queen. Some time here MAPCO
will also find time to take another birds-eye look at 1845 London from a balloon on the south side of the Thames.
After that, well, we will have to see what the future brings...

Bartholomew's Handy Reference Atlas Of London & Suburbs 1908.
|
~ 1908 Atlas Map Of London Now On Display ~
Bartholomew's Handy Reference Atlas Of London & Suburbs 1908 is now online!
This atlas of London was published in 1908 by John George Bartholomew. It slightly predates the construction of White City for the 1908 Olympic Games in London, although the vacant site is clearly visible. This will be of great interest for those Olympic historians who may be investigating London's Olympic past in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.
Naturally this atlas will be a fabulous family history research aid for the 1911 Census of London. The atlas includes a 68 page "General Index To Streets, Public Buildings, Railway Stations, Etc.", which will be scanned and displayed in the near future.
I hope that you find this atlas of use for finding London streets in the 1911 census.
