More Sweet
MAPCO has just purchased 2 more of Sweet's albumen prints of South Australian.
The first is another photograph of King William St., Adelaide.
The second is labelled "Putupa Gap Bridge, Adelaide", but the camels in the foreground suggest this is a Flinders Ranges photograph.
These images will be displayed on the site in the next few weeks.

MAPCO has just purchased 3 albumen prints of South Australian views for display on the Views of Adelaide and South Australia page.
The first photograph is King William St., Adelaide, by Captain Sweet c1880, and carries Sweet's distinctive mark of Sweet Adelaide on the image.
I believe that the other 2 prints can be attributed to Sweet also, although more research is required to determine this for certain. These photos are of the Botanic Gardens, S.A., c1880, and a View On The Onkaparinga River, S.A., c1880.
These prints will be scanned for display by the end of April.
A portrait image of Sweet has just been displayed on the site, taken from Notable South Australians; Or, Colonists - Past And Present, by George E. Loyau.

| MAPCO Updates & Current Work Commitments
Due to work and personal commitments there have been few significant updates to the MAPCO website in recent months. While I intend to continue working on the MAPCO site, I am unable to guarantee a time frame for any future display items at this point in time.
Similarly, I have a number of unanswered email enquiries dating back to early December. Again, I apologise for this, and will do my best to begin addressing these in coming weeks.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. Despite my other commitments I am optimistic that 2008 will be a significant year for the MAPCO website!
Regards,
David.

The Strangers Guide Through the Streets of London and Westminster &c.
Pub'd Jan 12th 1814

A Plan Of The Town & Harbour Of Whitehaven In The County Of Cumberland 1790
|
Happy New Year to you all! I hope that 2008 will be a wonderful year for you, and also for the MAPCO website.
Ongoing work and personal commitments have resulted in slower than anticipated progress with displaying of maps over the past 6 week. However, work is still proceeding on William Darton's Strangers Guide Through the Streets of London and Westminster &c 1814 ( A New And Correct Plan Of London And Westminster With The Latest Improvements), and I hope
to have this map on display by mid January.
Work has also commenced on Edward Weller's 1866 The Immense Map Of London. Scanning of this map will be a large task, but I hope to also have this completed by mid January.
And finally, the Cumberland map entitled A Plan Of The Town & Harbour Of Whitehaven In The County Of Cumberland. From An Actual Survey Anno 1790 By J. Howard has finally arrived in the post. Scanning and display of this map should be a relative easy task, so I will attempt to work on this in January along with the Weller map of London.
Best wishes for 2008. The MAPCO website will continue to provide free access to many more rare and beautiful maps throughout the year. |

The Aldine History Of South Australia, Illustrated, 1890
|
Images from the Aldine History Of South Australia, Illustrated, 1890, by W. Frederick Morrison, M.A., M.D., have just been displayed.
The 25 images chosen for display represent approximately half those present in the two volumes. A full list of the remaining images of flora, fauna, general scenes, and portraits of noted South Australians will be included on the site soon.
The Plan Of The City Of Adelaide will be displayed in full in the near future. This map of Adelaide will be displayed in the same manner as other MAPCO maps, with a navigation thumbnails and enlarged section images. The original printed map is not of the highest quality, so MAPCO will attempt to improve this by digitally manipulating the scanned image. As with many images
displayed on the site, this map will be digitally repaired and enhanced to ensure that the detail is as clear as possible for users of the site.

| Australian Maps
Many of you will remember the news posted here on 16 April 2007 regarding the loss of 8 Australian maps in an office fire in London. I received numerous messages of support at the time, and I vowed that I would attempt to source replacement copies of these maps for display if possible.
I was amazed to learn recently that the Australian maps had in fact survived the fire, and that they have emerged from the inferno completely unharmed! Only one of the maps was in fact lost to the fire. The 7 surviving Australian maps will now be displayed here as part of the Map And Plan Collection Online.
The surviving maps are:

London c1868

Hyde Park c1868

Hampstead c1868

Kensington c1868

Hello Everyone.
It has been quite a while since there has been a real update to the MAPCO website. A change in my working life has meant that I have less time for MAPCO projects at the moment, but hopefully I will be back on track again during November.
In the meantime I am pleased to announce the recent acquisition of a hand-coloured copy of Edward Weller's c1868 map of London. Measuring 197cm x 142cm, this highly detailed map has a large scale of 9⅜" to 1 statue mile.
Weller's map of London was first published during 1861-62 in the Weekly Dispatch. The 1866 edition of this map, known at the time as The Immense Map Of London, was published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin, and boasted upward of 2000 improvements and alterations, including 900 new street names.
MAPCO's copy of this map was published by George Washington Bacon sometime between 1868 and 1870, shortly after his recovery from bankruptcy in 1867. During this period Bacon was sharing premises with another mapmaker, William Tweedie, at 337 Strand. By 1870 Bacon had moved to 127 Strand, from where the firm of G.W. Bacon & Co. became one of London's premier map publishers.
Displaying Weller's beautiful map of London will be one of the largest projects ever undertaken for the MAPCO website. The tasks of scanning the map sections and creating the web pages will be quite time consuming, but I am hopeful that the map will be on display by the end of January 2008.
Details of this map are:
